Earlier this month, on the first of November, I rolled out of bed with much anticipation on my mind. This was the morning that would commence the holiday season. 93.9 WLIT, The Lite, is famous around Chicago for being the city’s main Christmas music outlet. I had been waiting for this particular day since December 25th of the previous year. It was going to be a magical day between me and my radio.
The minute I rolled out of bed, I scrambled for the radio. I tuned the radio to 93.9 FM and waited for the jingling of the holiday bells. Instead of the holiday bells that I was expecting, my eardrums processed the cacophonic sound of some lame rock group that I have never heard of. Enraged, I stormed downstairs to my computer to see why the The Lite was not playing my beloved Christmas music.
So I pulled up www.wlit.com to see what the heck was going on. My rage became even more intensifying when I discovered that the Christmas music was not going to begin until November 15th. After I read that notice, I knew I was in for 15 impatient days.
Some people may think that having Christmas music start on the first of November, the day after Halloween, is a little sickening. I halfway, agree with that. It seems unhealthy to want Christmas music so early. After all, the month of November is part of the fall season. Isn’t Christmas music more of a winter or December thing? I admit my disease, and I feel no shame from it all. I am more than comfortable with the fact that I am grossly obsessed with Christmas music. Consequently, others are made uneasy.
Senior William Hanley is all for the banning of premature Christmas music.
“Christmas music has no place in the month of November. If you ask me, December 1st would be a perfect timetable,” said Hanley, without any sympathy in his voice.
On the other side of things, there are people out there like myself who absolutely adore Christmas music and all the sentiments that come with it.
Senior Katy Burris combats Hanley’s point of view. The more Christmas music, the better.
“I was so disappointed when I found out that the Christmas music had not started yet. I have been looking forward to it all of October. I am so excited for it to start though. I started listening to Christmas music on my iPod because it has not been on the radio,” stated Burris.
Now that the Christmas music has finally arrived on The Lite, I think an early Merry Christmas is deserved to all.
