As the Sixteenth Annual Chicagoland High School Video Festival approaches, TV production students of all levels polish and prepare their projects in anticipation. With over 70 judges viewing over 1,800 minutes of programming, this year’s competition is sure to be a significant opportunity for young producers and a major occasion for RBTV.
The festival, which will be held on the 24th of April, allows attendees to view the numerous videos submitted by high school students in 16 distinctly different categories. These videos will be featured simultaneously in separate rooms and followed up by an awards ceremony to honor the winners.
When asked about her hopes for the event, Lisa Traut, the Applied Technology Department Chair of Neuqua Valley High School said “In simple terms, my greatest hope is that everything goes off without a hitch and that the 464 students in attendance enjoy the day and are able to learn and bring back new ideas to their high school programs.”
Fifteen years ago, when the first Annual CTEC Video Festival was held at Columbia College, 150 videos were submitted and 24 Chicago area high schools participated. Today, these numbers have more than doubled with over 420 entries representing nearly 40 schools. All in all, over 400 students are expected to attend.
The video festival also offers five scholarships to promising contestants specializing in the field of television production. Three of these $1000 scholarships are reserved for senior students and the remaining two are available to sophomores and juniors.
“In many ways, this festival is equivalent to a state competition for television students,” said Traut, “even though we don't compete against schools from downstate. Our hope is that students will leave this festival with an appreciation for the work that other schools do and be inspired by the work of their peers.”
