When the calendar turns from May to June, that means school is out and summer is in session. Many students will be attending sports camps and summer school programs through RB. But the problem this year is that due to construction, RB will be closed the entire summer.
Summer schools and sports camps that are held in the school annually now have to be relocated. Some summer school programs are being held at next door Hollywood school.
Each summer school course that offers a credit only has one session this year, running from June 17 to July 7. Courses such as Drivers’ Ed, Health, Fine Arts Survey, and a summer television workshop are all taking place at Hollywood school.
Two other summer school camps are also being held in the auto shop.
Sports camps for RB teams are also facing changes. Some camps are not affected such as soccer, football, baseball, tennis, and others. Sports such as boys and girl’s basketball, boys and girls volleyball, and sports conditioning and weight training will be held at the Max Expo Center.
“I don’t think it will be that tough because I have a license, but I bet it will be hard for people that can’t drive,” said Sophomore John Schraidt.
The Max is a relatively new facility in McCook that has two basketball courts, an indoor soccer fields, pitching mounds, and weight equipment. The Max is located exactly two miles away from RB. Because many RB students typically walk to summer camps, the new location will force them to seek alternative transportation.
These new summer camp sites are only taking place this year because the construction project will be completed by the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.
