Star Trek Review

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
●Set up as a prequel to the Star Trek TV series
●No previous Star Trek knowledge needed to enjoy the movie
●Excellent movie with great acting

The highly anticipated Star Trek movie hit theaters on May 8th, 2009, grossing just over 72 million dollars in its opening weekend.

Star Trek has a deep history and a dedicated fan base; however, you don’t need to know anything about Star Trek in order to enjoy this movie. I don’t know a thing about Star Trek other than the basic character names. There were probably smaller inside jokes in the dialogue that would only make sense of you knew all about the series, but the movie was by no means a bunch of “trekkie” lingo that no one but avid fans could understand.

The U.S.S. Enterprise as seen in Star Trek. .

Star Trek opens with a scene depicting the birth of James Tiberius Kirk, a major character in the film. After a few more brief scenes, it then transitions to twenty two years later, when James T. Kirk has grown into a young man.

After a brief interaction with Christopher Pike, a Starfleet captain, Kirk decides to enlist into Starfleet Academy with hopes to become a captain himself. The audience is also introduced to Spock, a half human, half Vulcan Starfleet Academy graduate.

After a couple eventful situations, Kirk finds himself onboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. A couple of federation ships are sent in order to find the reason behind a distress signal they have received from the planet Vulcan. When the Enterprise arrives at planet Vulcan, the planet is being destroyed by the Narada, a Romulan mining vessel, under the command of Romulan captain Nero.

I don’t want to spoil the whole movie, but basically Kirk and Spock are tasked with stopping Nero.

I would highly recommend everyone go see the movie and find out what happens. Star Trek was a fantastic movie and a perfect blend of action and comedy. The characters are perfectly cast and the plot was cleverly written and extremely entertaining.

From the minute the movie started, my eyes were glued to the screen. The opening scene really grabs your attention, and the eye grabbing action and humorous dialogue keeps it throughout the movie.

I would recommend Star Trek to anyone that’s a fan of the sci-fi genre, or just wants to go see an entertaining movie. Even if action movies aren’t normally your thing, I think that you may like Star Trek.
