Students raise money for Darfur crisis through Othello movie premiere

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
●Brought Othello to life through various themed movies
●Over $2,500 dollars raised for the Darfur Crisis
●Students had fun and learned a lot

On Tuesday May 19th, 2009, students in English teacher Allison Cabaj’s honors freshman English class premiered their Othello movie project in an effort to raise money for Darfur.

After reading through William Shakespeare’s Othello, the students were put in groups and tasked with writing, filming, and editing a movie depicting a certain portion of the novel. The original plot and basic idea of the text had to be present; however, the students were given the freedom to create their own setting for their movie.

Freshman Dovas Lietuvninkas said, “My group chose a pirate theme for our project. I think the project was really fun and the premiere went incredibly well.”

Once all the movies had been created, they were all put in sequential order to make a full length movie covering all of Othello. Although the themes did not stay the same, the basic plot followed the book and was consistent throughout the group’s movies.

The premiere was shown in the little theater at a ticket price of three dollars. All the proceeds went towards helping Darfur. Over $2,500 dollars were raised during the project.

Freshman George Suchy said, “The whole project was kind of hectic, but I think our hard work really paid off. Darfur is a big humanitarian crisis right now and it was nice to be able to help out.”

Lietuvninkas added, “Overall this whole project was really fun and I think that everyone learned a lot.”

Although DVD’s of the projects aren’t available for purchase anymore, money can still be donated to the Darfur cause at www.savedarfur.org.
