In response to Pete Jansen's opinion piece "Religious influences in school":

Dear Mr. Jansen,

Simply singing songs that mention God does not constitute an endorsement of a particular religion by RBHS. Rather, the musical selections illustrate the music that is played/ sung at that time of year. Not only were there Christian songs but also Jewish and secular songs as well.

Try to keep in mind that the intent and application of the first amendment (up until 1954 anyway) did not intend to scrub away all traces of religion but rather prohibit the endorsement of a particular religion. It allows for freedom of religion as well.

I also find it ironic that most people of faith demonstrate much tolerance toward atheists, yet, on this issue, it seems to be you who are demonstrating intolerance. It is too bad that you could not sit back and enjoy the performance for what it was; a celebration of holiday music.

Respectfully,
                William J. Frey
