I strongly recommend The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. It is a must read for people of all ages. While reading this novel, I found myself laughing out loud at certain parts during the novel. The book also has many memorable one liners. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian reads very quickly, and can be easily finished in one sitting. The story is engrossing and you want to find out what happens next.
The novel follows the story of Arnold “Junior”, an Indian living on a reservation, and his adventures attending an all white high school. It covers all sorts of topics throughout his life including relationships, sports teams, and interactions with friends.
Junior is an aspiring cartoonist and many of his cartoons are included in the book. The drawings provide a comical and visual look at what is being said. Characters come alive when Junior’s drawing and descriptions of them are seen.
Junior is a fascinating character and as a reader I was eager to find out what was going to happen to him and how the novel was going to conclude.
Author Sherman Alexie uses witty language and an engrossing story with humorous pictures to capture attention. Although some of the humor tends to be a little dark, I found myself smiling and chuckling throughout the whole novel. Despite all the humor used, Alexie packs a powerful message in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian.
