“When I was little my dad was into the Beatles and I liked all the pictures I saw of them,” said Junior Maggie Heraty of her inspiration for her artwork.  Heraty’s painting of former Beatle member John Lennon took first place in this year’s Winter Art Show.

At the Winter Art Show, teachers from Triton and professional artists from the area judged the different forms of artwork.  The pieces fell into different categories and Heraty’s was in the painting category.

“I got second place last year in the drawing category and this year was my first time getting first place,” said Heraty.

Heraty was assigned to do a project about a modern icon and was allowed to use any materials she wanted.

“I used paint and paper and made a picture of John Lennon with his lyrics in the background,” said Heraty.

Heraty’s painting was based off a picture she had seen of him and liked.  One interesting feature of her painting is the black glasses that extend out from Lennon’s face.

“I went to a thrift shop and found old speakers and made them his glasses,” said Heraty.

Not only did Heraty’s painting take first place, it was also picked to be the cover of the Winter Art Show brochure.

“The teachers liked mine a lot because it was very vibrant and eye catching,” said Heraty.

Heraty has been doing artwork since she was about five and wants to continue doing it for a long time.

“I like art because I’m able to use my imagination and create stuff.  It’s the freedom to do what you want,” said Heraty.
